Track was invented by the Greeks. It was first introduced as a sport
in the Olympics in 776 B.C. in Athens, Greece. In fact, it was the
first Olympic sport ever. It did not become popular until the 1800's.
Women were not allowed to run in the Olympics until the late 1800's.
Roger Bannister was the first person to run a mile in less than four minutes.
In one Olympic race, several runners collapsed during an 800 meter run.
Olympic officials placed a ban on the race that lasted thirty-two years.
Running is an easy sport to follow the rules. There are relay races,
which are when more than one person on a team or country runs, taking turns.
A marathon is a race that is at least 26 miles long and requires a lot
of endurance. Then there are various meter races. When you
are running in a race and are competing, you must stay in your lane but
some races you do not. There are 2, 3, or 4 rounds in a competition.
A runner that finishes in first or second place will go onto the next heat.
A heat is the race itself. Hurdles are when there is a board you
must jump over and keep running until you get to the next hurdle.
A false start is when you start running before the whistle blows.
Two false starts equals disqualification.
