History and Rules Of Wrestling

Wrestling was started more than 15,000 years ago. Drawings were found on the walls of caves in France.  There are drawings from Egyptian and Babylonian times showing wrestlers doing holds they do today.  In ancient  Greece, wrestling  was the most important contest of the Olympics games.  In Rome, wrestling was the same as Greek wrestling but not so vicious.  In the middle ages wrestling was still popular. The colonist  found that wrestling was still popular with the Native Americans.  The first wrestling tournament was held in New York in 1888.  The first tournament in the Olympic games was in 1904 in Saint Louis, Missouri.  Then in 1912, the first NCAA wrestling championship was held in Iowa.  Wrestling became an Olympic event in 1983.

There are two ways of wrestling at the Olympic games.  One of the ways of  wrestling is the Greek Roman.  Another way of wrestling is freestyle.  The wrestlers in Greek and Roman times used their bodies and arms to make their opponent fall to the ground.  In freestyle wrestling, the wrestler may use his legs, arms, and body to make their opponent fall to the ground.  In wrestling, there are certain rules about a wrestler's body.  You cannot have long finger nails or a beard.  Wrestlers  also cannot have jewelry and are not allowed to  be sweaty.  Wrestlers must have a handkerchief in their outfits at all times. This became a rule a long time ago when people needed to wipe their runny noses.  The wrestler uses the handkerchief in case their nose starts to bleed.  All of these rules are to protect the wrestlers.
