History of Freestyle Skiing

In the year 1960 the sport freestyle skiing (one of the many forms of skiing) came into the mind of a man named Stein Erikson of Norway.  Erikson was a down hill slalom gold medallist  in 1952. After the Olympics Erikson  decided to try and make some money. So he found a fair sized snow bank and charged $1,000 a show to do back flips on his skiis off a snow bank.
Then in 1966, Peter Pinkham  took the sport one step closer to the Olympics by organizing the first freestyle skiing competition. It was held in Attitash, New Hampshire. After this first competition,  the new sport started to become popular.  People were getting seriously injured from crashes. Then the sport became less popular until the 1980's when the sport had its first world cup competition. The first competitions were held in the United States in 1983. Later on in 1986, the first world Championships were held in Finges, France. This was the site of the freestyle skiing competition in the 1992 Olympics. Then in 1988, the Calgary Olympic freestyle skiing competition  was greeted by large crowds of excited fans. In 1994, freestyle skiing became a medal event in the Olympics.
