History of Hockey

Hockey started in the Middle Ages with makeshift skates.  Even though people believed the  North Americans  were the first hockey players ever, it started in Europe. One thing that helped hockey form was that the Romans played '''Panganica'',  which is similar to hockey.  This helped because people started to enjoy hockey.  So when it got really popular this is what happened.  First, there was the first ever game of hockey played. The game was played with McGill students on the Montreal campus in  1865. In that game a man named W.F. Robertson realized that the game needed more rules. So he made the first ever set  of hockey rules. Then in 1908, the game of hockey appeared in the Olympics for the first time ever and it was in London. Then surprisingly, the National Hockey Association was formed with the agreement that there would be 3 forwards, 2 defense men and 1 goalie on the ice at the same time. This was all in the year 1909. The  Stanley Cup was created in 1893, and it was given to the best Canadian team.  It was presented by Mr. Lord Stanley.

The rules of hockey are very interesting.  Here are two very important rules of hockey. The first one is off sides.  Off sides is when you go into the zone before the puck and then the puck goes in after you. The second rule is the in the crease rule. The in the crease rule is when you are in the crease and you score - it does not count, but if the puck was already in the crease it still counts.  The crease is a shaded blue area in front of the net to protect the goalie.  It protects the goalie because you can't go in the crease. Another big part of hockey is the penalties.  Some of the penalties are hooking, tripping, and slashing. Another two, are holding and roughing. When you commit a penalty you have to go into the penalty box and your team is down a man. The time given for penalties is 2 minutes, but if blood is drawn it is 4 minutes. When you are fighting, both players get 5 minutes and nobody is down a player, and that is the same for matching penalties.

U.S.A.

Cammi Granato represented the U.S.A. women's hockey team.  She was the captain of the United States women's team.  She competed in the 1998 Olympics in Nagano, Japan. The U.S.A. is in the Northern Hemisphere between Canada, and Mexico. Its population in 1998 was 280,000 (rounded). United States of America took a long time to get together.  The U.S. battled in so many wars to prevent and gain a variety of laws. Some of the wars were the Revolutionary War ,and the French and Indian War.  Right now I would like to thank the people who fought the wars for our country. They also formed a great country and improved it as well.
