PowerPoint Jeopardy

Step 1: Creating the chart

Choose a slide layout for the first slide (the one with just a title at the top works best). Type in your title. On the bottom of the screen, click on "Auto Shapes" and pick "basic shapes" then the rectangle. Hold down your mouse and drag it to make the rectangle the size that you'd like. Now go up to Edit on the top toolbar and choose Copy. Go back to the rectangle, and if you want a different color, just right click on the shape, and choose "format auto shape". Then under "fill color" choose the color you want. This will be the color of your top row (the Jeopardy categories). Next, we'll make the rectangles to form the rest of the chart (these will have your dollar amounts in them). So right click on a rectangle and hit "paste" one more time. This is the first box for your dollar amounts. You probably want it a different color than the top row, so right click on the new rectangle, and choose "format auto shape". Then "fill color" and pick the color you'd like. NOTE THE COLOR YOU CHOSE, BECAUSE YOU'LL NEED IT LATER. Continue to paste the boxes to complete the first column. Now position your cursor to the top left of the top box. Click and hold your mouse and drag it so it outlines the whole column (it will have a dotted, vertical rectangle around it). Let go of the mouse and click on Draw (bottom left corner) and choose Group. To get Group to show, you might have to point your cursor to the bottom two arrows. Go to Edit > Copy. Then Edit > Paste. Reposition the new row and Paste another row. Now you can copy and paste this group of rectangles until you have enough for the chart. You can move the rectangles to form the chart by clicking on them so they're highlighted, then hold down the mouse and drag them where you want. Continue until your chart is complete. Once your chart is complete, go to Draw (bottom left corner) and choose Ungroup. (To get Ungroup to show, you might have to point your cursor to the bottom two arrows.)  You have to do this for every column.

Step 2: Adding text to the chart

The top row will contain your category titles. To type them in, go to the top of screen (the toolbar), choose "insert" then "text box". Hold and drag your mouse to form the text box inside your colored rectangle. Type in the first category. Repeat the process for the remaining categories. The rest of your table will contain the dollar amounts. Type those in the same way you did the categories. We'll create the links in another step. Copy and Paste can be used as shortcuts.

Step 3: Creating the question slides

We have to create the question slides before we can put the links in the chart. At the top of the page, go to "insert" and then "new slide". The easiest layout to use for this part, is the one with a title and bullets below it. Type in your question as the title, and the answer as the bullet. Then insert a new slide, type your next question and answer. Repeat until all your questions are complete. You might want to jot down which questions are on which slide.

Step 4: Creating the links in the chart

Go back to the slide containing your chart. Click on the first dollar amount, highlight it and at the top of the screen, select "insert" then "hyperlink". Click "Place In This Document" (on the left) and click on the slide you want to link to. When you're back on the chart, your dollar amount should be underlined, and it probably changed color. We'll change the color later if you'd like. Finish all the other links to the appropriate slides.

Step 5: Changing the color of the linked text

When we return from a question, we want the dollar amount to "disappear". We do this by changing the color of the link once it has been used - we change it to the box color, so you can't see it! At the top of your screen, click on "format" then "slide color scheme" then the "custom" tab. Click on the box in front of "accent and followed hyperlink" then "change color" PICK THE SAME COLOR AS THAT OF YOUR RECTANGLES! Click "OK" then "apply to all". If you didn't like the original color of your linked text, you can change that by again clicking on "format" then "slide color scheme" then "custom". Click on the box in front of "accent and hyperlink" and choose a new color.

Step 6: Linking the question slides back to the chart

The easiest way to do this is to use "action buttons". Go to the slide with your first question. At the bottom of the screen, click on "auto shapes", then "action buttons" (To get "action buttons" to show, you might have to point your cursor to the bottom two arrows.). Pick the shape you want. Drag and hold the mouse to draw the action button. A menu will come up saying "hyperlink to" (choose the first slide). Repeat this process for your remaining slides containing questions. You can copy and paste the action button onto each slide.

Step 7: Animation effects

You want the questions to appear first, then show answers on a mouse click, so you need animation effects. View the "slide sorter" and then "edit"..."select all". Click on the down arrow to the right of "no effect" (on the top, near the toolbar) and choose how you want your answers to fly in. You can also do a screen transition here, if you like.

Step 8: Congratulations!

You are done! Once you have done all this once, you can just change the question slides, save your new Jeopardy game under a different name and save yourself a lot of time.
