Dear Crown:

The grassland is our biome. A biome is a large geographic region with a particular kind of climate or community. There are many plants in our biome that can be used for food. The largest crop you will find is wheat. It can also be used as food. Our biome is made up of ninety percent grass. A grassland can survive dry periods of time because the grass has long root systems. In the winter, the cold snow decomposes the tips of the grass which makes the soil richer. The richer the soil, the better the crops grow. Some areas of the grassland are very hilly. The grassland biomes around the world are called the "Breadbaskets" because they are ideal for growing grass and cereal grains. Grass seeds, or grains are used to make cereal, bread, rice and many other foods.

Sometimes lightning hits a tree and the tree falls starting a fire. This can be problem during a dry spell. It is because of these long dry spells, that our biome is not good for housing. The extreme heat also makes living here a problem. The animals that live in the grasslands have had to adapt to the environment. Adapt means a plant or animal inherits a certain characteristic that helps it survive in its environment. An example of this would be the mouse, because the color of its skin or fur blends into the, grass or wheat. The mouse eats the grass to get water. I hope you find this information helpful.

Sincerely,
Bo

Dear Crown,

Our biome is the Grassland, also known as (Savanna). A biome is a distinct ecological community of plants and animals living together in a particular climate. Grasslands are places with hot, dry climates that are perfect for growing food. Our biome is found in many continents and countries. Some of the continents are Asia, South America, Australia, and Africa. The countries that the Grassland biome is found in are India, Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. Our biomes temperature yearly is about 30° C to 35° C. The annual rainfall is 76.2 - 101.6 cm (30-40 inches). The average precipitation is about 50.8 to 88.9 cm (20-35 inches). Their summers are very hot - they are 90° F. The winters are also really cold; they can drop to about 20° F. As you can see, the weather is very extreme. Grass is one of the major plants in our biome. Some other various species of grass found there include purple needlegrass, blue grama, buffalo grass, and galleta. Flowers include asters, blazing stars, coneflowers, goldenrods, sunflowers, clovers, and wild indigos. Some of the major animals or (fauna) in our biome are gazelles, zebras, rhinos, wild horses, lions, wolves, prairie dogs, jack rabbits, deer, mice, coyotes, foxes, and snakes.

Sincerely,
Jonathan

Dear Academy of Science and His Excellency

Eureka! We have found a new biome.  It is called the grassland.  It is in the center of Asia and some is near its edges.  Its climate is much like the Temperature Deciduous Forest -  cold harsh winters, hot, somewhat comfortable summers - that is at least what the natives told us. The difference between the deciduous forest and the Grasslands is the precipitation is less, and dry periods often occur. That is important because that leads to another difference - its vegetation. Speaking of vegetation, let me tell you about it.

The Grassland mostly has grass, of course, but it also has other types of plants. There are many kinds of trees. Here are a few of them. There is the red bud tree, the silver maple tree, box elder tree and so much more. There are many other plants too. There is the prairie blazing staff, stinging meddle plant, poison ivy, peapod, milkweed, aster plant, astor plant, blue stern, cowslip and so much more. There are also three types of coneflower. There is the sweet coneflower, the purple coneflower and the orange coneflower. That is some of the vegetation in the Grassland.

There are many types of animals and birds in the Grassland. Some are the African elephant, black rhinoceros, black footed ferret, zebra, bison, hyena, giraffe, prairie chicken, prairie dog, lion, ostrich, wart hog, badger and so much more. There are also many types of deer, antelope, buffalo, snakes, gofers, asses, hares and rabbits, cattle, lemmings, skunks, coyotes and wolves and so much more. There are also many birds, such as the goldfinch bird, prairie falcon, golden eagle, turkey buzzard, secretary bird and so much more. Those are some of the many types of animals and birds there are.

Here are some interesting facts about the Grassland. Grasslands are also called prairies. One quarter of the Earth's world is made up of Grasslands. Grassland's nickname is the breakfast basket of the world. It is called this because it produces wheat, which is what most breakfast foods are known as. The rainfall is only up to 10 to 30 inches in drought season. Bluebell stem grass (a common grass in the Grassland) can grow up to 11 feet about two of me. Grasslands have the most variety of animals. That is all you need to know about Grassland.

Sincerely
Hannah  [biologist]
