JAKE

NARRATIVE

The picture you see above is a photo of my dog Jake as a puppy. He is now eight years old. We got him in a basement in Fall River. He was born into a litter of six. There were three yellow labs, two black labs, and Jake the only chocolate lab. His father was named Coco. He is a chocolate lab. His mother was named Marcie. She is a yellow lab. Jake was registered in at the American Kennel Club (A.K.C.) as a purebred.

He sheds very badly, and his skin is dry and flaky. But we have gotten him a special shampoo that helps bring moisture to his scalp. He is a little overweight but loves his rawhides. He has a bad habit of being lazy and getting on the couch. Each day when I leave for school I have to put magazines, and clickers on the couch to keep him off but he's so lazy he sleeps on them anyway. Otherwise he is a good dog, and a loyal pet.

HEREDITY

Jake is a purebred chocolate Labrador retriever. Male labs are about 23 to 25 inches high at the shoulder, and should be around 60 to 75 pounds. Their tails have the same coarse hair as their bodies, and are medium in length. The tails are wide at the beginning and slowly narrow out. The female however is somewhat smaller than the male. Their coat, or fur is "impervious" to water so it does not take as long to dry when they jump in the water to retrieve game. Labs make very good pets, and hunting dogs. Most dogs like Jake make faithful companions, and a best friend.

About Heredity of Labs

Historical and Geographic Background

This breed originated in Newfoundland (a province of Canada). It was bred by duck hunters looking to make a dog that would fetch small killed or wounded game such as ducks, raccoons, and rabbits. It was said this breed evolved from two Labradors. One black, and one liver. The puppies were born in Newfoundland and were later brought to England.
