Bonnie Belle

Narrative

This is my dog Bonnie Belle. We got her from our neighbors when she was four weeks old. One day my brother was playing with the last four puppies of the litter and he brought one into the house. He gave it to my mom and she fell in love with it. At first, we called her Noel because we got her at Christmas time, but the neighbors told us they had been calling her Daisy Mae so we considered that name. When my dad got home he wanted to name her Bonnie so that's how she got her name.

Bonnie is my dog. She was born on November 5,1997, and she has the same birthday as my mom. Bonnie is very funny. When I sit on the floor she thinks she's still a puppy and sits on your lap. Bonnie is very smart . I am teaching her to stay next to me.  When I walk she walks, and when I stop, she stops. She almost has it! She loves to play fetch. You could hit a golf ball three hundred yards into the woods and she will bring it back.

Heredity

Bonnie is a pure bred black Labrador retriever. Her mother is a black lab and her father is a chocolate lab.  Bonnie is black, but when the light hits her fur at the right angle you can see the chocolate lab on the tips of her fur. Since the black gene was dominant the chocolate lab will probably show up in her puppies.

Background

Some people say the Labrador retriever developed in England and was brought over to Newfoundland by fisherman in the 1800s. Others say the opposite.  They say it originated in Newfoundland and was brought overseas to England. When they mixed the Newfoundland dog and another breed together, they were trying to make the perfect gun dog.
